How to get from Tirana to Ksamil by bus

If you're booking a bus from Tirana to Ksamil, here's the first thing to know: there's no direct line. Ksamil is a small village at the southern tip of Albania, about 17 km past Saranda, and no intercity bus runs straight there. The way travellers gets to Ksamil is to take the bus from Tirana to Sarandë, then cover the last 30 minutes by local bus or taxi.

The good news is that the Tirana to Saranda bus line runs daily, year-round, with multiple departures throughout the day. From there, getting to Ksamil is quick and cheap.

Why Ksamil is worth the trip

Ksamil is one of the biggest hidden gems in the Balkans and arguably in the world. A small village at the southern tip of Albania with three uninhabited islands sitting just off the main beach, water so clear you can see your feet in waist-deep sea, and the Greek island of Corfu visible across the strait. The photos you've seen aren't filtered. That's just what it looks like.

Days have a simple rhythm. Coffee on the beach, swim or paddle out to one of the islands, lunch of grilled fish or fresh mussels from Butrint lagoon next door, an afternoon nap, sunset facing Corfu, dinner under string lights.

Worth knowing: from June through August, Ksamil gets seriously busy. Locking in your seat a month or two in advance keeps you on the cheaper fares and guarantees you travel on the day you actually want, not whatever's still left.

The drive is around 5 hours, and it's one of the more interesting bus rides in the Balkans. With views that drop straight down to the Ionian Sea before winding into Saranda along the Riviera.

Beyond the beach: Day trips from Ksamil

One of the best things about Ksamil is how much of southern Albania opens up from it. Saranda sits 20 minutes up the road and acts as the regional transport hub, so once you're settled in Ksamil, day trips to ruins, mountain springs, hilltop towns, and even another country are all on the table. Most travellers stay 3–5 nights and pick two or three of the below.

The Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) is the obvious next stop a natural spring whose water is so deep and so blue it looks digitally retouched. From Saranda it's about 40 minutes bus ride. You can book your ticket online from Saranda to Blue Eye. Bring a towel if you want to dip in the water is freezing cold even in August.

Further into the mountains, Gjirokastër is a longer day trip worth making. A UNESCO-listed Ottoman town built into a hillside, with stone-roofed houses, a 12th-century castle, and one of the best preserved old bazaars in the Balkans. The Saranda to Gjirokaster bus takes about 1h 30min each way, leave early, eat lunch in the old town, and you can be back at the beach for sunset. Plenty of travellers pair it with the Blue Eye, since both sit on the same road inland.

If you want a completely different coast for the day, head north up the Albanian Riviera. The Saranda to Himara bus runs through cliffside villages and drops you near quieter beaches like Livadhi and Gjipe rougher, wilder, and a good contrast to Ksamil's calm bay.

Then there's the international option. Corfu is 30 minutes by ferry from Sarandë port, with multiple sailings a day in summer. It's an EU border crossing, so bring your passport.

The point is this: stay in Ksamil for the water and the slow mornings, but use Saranda as the launchpad. Three or four days here goes a long way.
