Berat in Autumn: Why the City of a Thousand Windows Shines Now

13 Oct, 2026

A city that looks back at you

Stand by the river in Berat and look up. Hundreds of white houses climb the hill in rows, their windows so close together that it feels like the whole town is watching you arrive. That's why people call it the City of a Thousand Windows. People have lived in Berat for more than 2,000 years, and you can feel it: a castle where families still hang their laundry, old churches with paintings older than most countries, and stone streets covered by grapevines. In autumn, the summer crowds are gone, the sun turns everything golden, and the vineyards around the city start picking grapes. If any season was made for Berat, it's this one.

Your autumn day(s) in Berat

Climb to Berat Castle. Getting to Berat is the easy part; the walk up to the castle is your warm-up. People still live inside the castle walls, so it feels like a small village, not a museum. Don't miss the Holy Trinity Church, a small old church with a great view of the valley, and the Onufri Museum, named after a famous painter from 500 years ago. He used a red color that nobody has been able to copy since. End at the viewpoint above the Gorica side of town.

Get lost in Mangalem

Below the castle, the Mangalem neighborhood is the Berat you see on postcards. Narrow streets, family guesthouses, people selling homemade jam at their doors. Take your time; one hour here can easily turn into three.

Cross the Gorica Bridge

On the other side of the river is Gorica, Mangalem's quieter twin. Its stone bridge is one of the oldest in Albania, and in the afternoon the sun lights up the houses on this side beautifully. Autumn afternoons are perfect for a slow walk by the river.

Walk up to the Gorica ruins at sunset

A path behind Gorica takes you up to old ruins with the best view of the thousand windows. Bring a light jacket, because October evenings get cold quickly.

Join the evening xhiro

When the sun goes down, the whole town goes for a walk on the main street, Bulevardi Republika. This evening walk is called the xhiro. Join in, then sit at a café and watch Berat say good evening.

Why autumn is the best time

October is grape-picking season around Berat, one of Albania's oldest wine areas. Local wineries open their doors for tastings, and in the villages you can smell fresh raki (a strong local drink). The weather is also perfect for nature: Osumi Canyon and the Bogova Waterfall, both about an hour away, are much nicer without the summer heat. Buses don't go there easily, so a local tour or a taxi is your best choice.

Tips, tricks and hacks

Wear good shoes. The castle streets are steep and the stones are slippery, especially in the rain.

Keep cash on you. Many guesthouses, small restaurants and churches only take lek.

Eat inside the castle at least once. Local dishes like tavë (meat or vegetables baked in a clay pot), stuffed peppers and qofte (meatballs) taste even better with that view.

Sleep in an old house. Many guesthouses in Mangalem and Gorica are old family homes, fixed up for guests. Breakfast with homemade jam is usually included.

Ask for the key. Some old churches are locked. Ask someone nearby; there is usually a local who has the key.

Do's and don'ts

Do start the castle climb in the morning, when the light is best.

Do try a glass of local wine; this is the place for it.

Don't plan Berat as a 2-hour stop. Stay at least one night.

Don't forget it gets dark around 6:30 pm in October, so plan your walks early.

Coming from somewhere else?

Berat is easy to reach from other places too. Travelers from the south can come from Vlora, and there are even direct buses from Skopje. Want more history? From Berat you can go on to Gjirokastra, Albania's other old stone city.
